People who drink coffee primarily in the morning have a lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared to those who don’t drink coffee or consume it throughout the day.
This is the finding of a study published Wednesday 8 january 2025 in the European Health Journal.

For the study, researchers from Tulane University in the United States analyzed data from over 40,000 adults who participated in the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 1999 and 2018.
The results showed that morning coffee drinkers had a 31% lower risk of cardiovascular death and a 16% lower overall mortality risk compared to non-coffee drinkers.
However, no health benefits were observed in participants who consumed coffee throughout the day. The prevailing theory for why timing matters is that drinking coffee in the afternoon or evening disrupts the body’s internal clock, negating its positive effects.
The beneficial impact of morning coffee consumption was most pronounced in individuals who drank two to three cups per day. Nonetheless, those who consumed more than three cups each morning also experienced positive effects on mortality risk.
